WRTA chief retires; interim leader named

The head of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority is retiring after 40 years of public service, and is being replaced on an interim basis by the transit system’s assistant administrator, the WRTA announced.

Stephen O’Neil announced his retirement to the WRTA’s advisory board last week, the agency said in a statement. The assistant administrator, Tom Coyne, will take over as interim administrator as of Aug. 7, the statement read.

The statement cited several accomplishments by O’Neil during his eight years in the role, notably seven consecutive years of a balanced budget, elimination of debt, increased ridership, construction of a $14-million, state-of-the-art hub next to Union Station, collaborative and improved union relations, technological advancements, electric buses, an increased focus on sustainability, and most recently, a purchase offer on the WRTA’s property on Grove Street.

Coyne has been with the WRTA since 2001, first as manager of finance and grants, then as assistant administrator since 2008.
