WPI to top off $45M innovation center

Worceser Polytechnic Institute will reach a construction milestone Thursday with its new $45-million Foisie Innovation Studio and Residence Hall.

A topping-off ceremony is scheduled Thursday afternoon, when the highest beam on the top of the structure will be put in place. The 75,000 square-foot building is slated to open for the fall of 2018.

The building, which replaces Alumni Gymnasium, will include two floors of classrooms, laboratories and offices, and three floors of living space for 140 students. It is being built on the northeast edge of the quad between Harrington Auditorium and Higgins Laboratories.

The modern brick-and-glass building is named for Robert A. Foisie, a 1956 graduate of WPI and a major donor.

The topping-off ceremony Thursday will start at 3:15 p.m., with the top beam ceremonially put into place at 3:30 p.m.
