Worcester Polytechnic Institute has named Mimi Sheller, a professor and head of the department of Drexel University in Philadelphia, as the inaugural dean of The Global School, WPI announced on Wednesday.
The Global School is WPI’s newest school, launched in 2020, and is intended to serve as a platform for research programs, global partnerships and tackling global issues, like climate change. The school is projected to provide faculty and students with opportunities to collaborate with students, academics, governments, non-governmental organizations, and local communities.
Sheller, according to WPI, is a co-founder of an interdisciplinary field known as mobilities research. She holds a bachelor's degree in history and literature from Harvard University and Radcliffe College, as well as a master’s degree in sociology and historical studies and a Ph.D. in sociology from the New School for Social Research in New York City. She joined Drexel University as a professor in 2009, and was named head of the sociology department in 2020, according to WPI.
“With her depth of knowledge of global issues, her extensive network of collaborators around the world, and her pioneering research in mobility justice, she will help the university build on its successes in global project-based learning to create a new model for applied global scholarship and education,” said WPI President Laurie Leshin in a statement.
