Worcester-based ECI Biotech and Systagenix of Quincy have formed a partnership to make diagnostic sensors for the treatment of infections in wounds at a manufacturing facility to be developed in Worcester.
When operational, the manufacturing facility will employ 12 people.
The licensing agreement combines ECI’s bacteria-detection technology with Systagenix’s wound care abilities. The companies said the result will be early disease detection and cheaper care thanks to a reduction in unnecessary treatments.
ECI was founded in 1998 and makes a “dressing sensor” and rapid diagnostic equipment designed to detect infection-causing bacteria in chronic wounds before patients begin showing symptoms of infection. Systagenix is a global company with corporate headquarters in the United Kingdom.
