Workers in the Worcester area made an average hourly wage of $23.11 in May 2010, a bit higher than the national average of $21.35, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The area, which includes much of Worcester County and a few Connecticut communities, had wages significantly higher than the national average in 12 of 22 occupational groups that the BLS looks at.
Eight percent of Worcester-area workers were employed in health care as practitioners or technical employees, compared with 5.8 percent of the U.S. workforce. Community and social services was also a more popular field in the area, accounting for 2.8 percent of the workforce, compared with 1.5 percent nationwide.
Only 2.9 percent of the area's workers were employed in construction and extraction, compared with 4 percent across the U.S.
The most common fields of employment overall were sales and related work, with 10 percent in Worcester and 10.6 percent nationwide, and office and administrative support, with 16.7 percent locally and 16.9 percent in the U.S.
