The City of Worcester recommends residents take precautions amid an unusually high nationwide outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV.

The rise in RSV cases is taking place at the same time as flu season, as well as continued COVID-19 spread, which is compounding stress on healthcare systems, according to a Friday press release from the City of Worcester.

RSV, in particular, is increasing hospital visits, especially for children, the city said. Officials recommended residents wear masks while socializing indoors, as well as at crowded outdoor events. RSV causes common cold symptoms in most people who contract it, but infants, young children, and other vulnerable groups are susceptible to more serious illnesses, like bronchitis and pneumonia.

The city urged residents to get flu shots and COVID-19 booster shots ahead of the cold weather months. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is offering $75 incentives to those who get boosted at certain clinics in Worcester.
