The Hanover Insurance Group has promoted Richard Lavey to the newly created role of chief operating officer.
Lavey, who has worked at the Worcester-based property and casualty insurance provider since 2004, was promoted into the position to create greater integration and collaborations between the firm’s business and technology organizations, according to a Friday press release from The Hanover.

“We are very pleased to have Dick assume this key role in our organization and to have his leadership over our company’s strategic operations,” John Roche, president and CEO at The Hanover, said in the press release. “In our rapidly changing and dynamic business, we are intently focused on the development of strategic operating models that deliver value for all our stakeholders and our company.”
Prior to the promotion, Lavey’s most recent title with the firm was executive vice president, president agency markets, according to his LinkedIn profile. Lavey has more than 35 years of experience working in the insurance industry.
He graduated from Worcester’s The College of the Holy Cross with an undergraduate degree in economics and from Harvard Business School with an MBA.
Lavey serves as the chair of the National Council on Compensation Insurance, a Florida-based organization focused on issues surrounding workers compensation.
