The City of Worcester was awarded the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s 2020-2021 RWJF Culture of Health Prize, according to a Tuesday press release from the New Jersey-based foundation.

This honor from the New Jersey-based foundation was given to 10 cities who are advancing health, opportunity, and equity within their communities.

Worcester received the RWJF Culture of Health Prize because of its equity-based programming and policy developments, which includes organizations such as the Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, Recreation Worcester, the Southeast Asian Coalition, and food justice programming, according to the release.

As part of its nomination, Worcester received a $25,000 prize and joined a network of other prize-winning communities, per the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

"We have an obligation in these positions of responsibility and power to make sure we bring along those who don't have access to opportunities,” said Ronald Waddell, executive director of Worcester nonprofit Legendary Legacies and co-chair of the Coalition for a Healthy Greater Worcester, in a written statement.

This year’s winners will be honored in a virtual RWJF Culture of Health Prize Celebration and Learning Event from Nov. 9-10.
