The Worcester City Council has postponed a vote on the city’s tax rate to Dec. 20.
The council met Tuesday night to discuss setting the annual tax rate, ultimately deciding to postpone the vote until their next meeting. The discussion that took place was split primarily between proponents of putting an additional burden on the business community while business representatives argued, as they had in years past, that the split tax rate for businesses and homeowners needs to move towards one rate in order to continue attracting businesses.
According to a report from the Telegram & Gazette, that yearly debate -- that went the direction of a wider rift between residential and business rates last year -- was thrown off by a suggestion of a third option by City Councilor Michael Gaffney, who proposed incorporating an anticipated increase in local receipts that would leave the rates where they are. Councilor Konnie Lukes requested additional time to review the impacts of the third option, and the vote was delayed until the council’s Dec. 20 meeting.
