Worcester-Based Program Gets STEM Boost

A Worcester-based program is one of five across the commonwealth that are being expanded to help more students pursue education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – also known as STEM - as a way to boost workforce development.

STEM Power Network, based out of the Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board in Worcester, will receive a portion of $428,000 awarded to the programs through the state's STEM Pipeline Fund, and will be eligible for matching funds from participating corporations, private foundations and the federal government, according to a statement from the office of Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray.

With the extra funds, the Worcester-based program will be able to reach all 16 workforce investment boards throughout the state, leading to the development of a multi-regional STEM "pathway" to reach more career centers and employers to support training in STEM-related fields that include health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology, biotechnology, life sciences and clean energy, Murray's office said.

The money comes through the state's STEM Advisory Council, which Murray leads.
