Westborough medical technology firm Miach Orthopaedics, Inc. announced Wednesday it has successfully made its breakthrough ACL-healing technology commercially available in select cities around the United States.
The BEAR Implant is the first medical technology to clinically demonstrate it enables healing of a patient’s torn ACL, according to the press release. This is a major shift away from the typical treatment for such injuries, which includes reconstruction replacing the ACL with a graft.
The technology, according to Miach, results in faster recovery in muscle strength and restores ACL quality and size similarly to non-injured ACLs. It stands to potentially have a significant impact on sports-related injuries.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest from patients who’ve torn their ACLs and are actively seeking an alternative to the current standard of care,” said Martha Shadan, president and CEO, Miach Orthopaedics, in a statement.
Approximately 400,000 ACL injuries occur in the United States each year, according to Miach, and ACL tears do not heal on their own.
