CASINOS IN MASS.
Our editorial from the Sept. 12 issue, in which we argued against casinos in Massachusetts, elicited a handful of reactions, including one from an online reader who took issue with some of the facts in our opinion, then another who cited the potential negative effects of casinos on business growth:
“In both Las Vegas and Atlantic City, dealers get substantial tips in addition to salaries and many forms of benefits. In fact many dealers refuse to take supervisory positions, paying over $50,000 per year, because they could take home less income than their bosses.”
Online Reader Steve Norton
“Secondary business growth from casinos are pawn shops and check cashing stores, examples of which you can see firsthand in Florida. Drive past the Hard Rock Casino on your way to Busch Gardens and you will find block after block of boarded-up businesses, or former businesses replaced by pawn shops and check-cashing stores. Not the multiplier effect one would like to see.”

CURTAIN UP, CRIME DOWN
What do members of our LinkedIn discussion group think about plans for a theater district in downtown Worcester? One reader said the city must ensure public safety for theater patrons, which brought out this reaction:
“It has been shown in countless studies that when there is a vibrant and numerous street life crime goes down.”
