Waters Corp. Develops Melamine Test

Waters Corp. announced today that it has published a rapid method to detect the contaminant that has been linked to kidney stones and renal failure in infants in China.

The process would allow quick tests of infant formula and milk to detect melamine. The Milford company said the system exceeds requirements of China's Ministry of Science and Technology, which issued guidelines for such a detection process after the chemical led to a widespread crisis in the country.

Thousands of people became ill and several infants died because of the contamination of milk products with melamine. The chemical may have been added to milk to make it appear in tests to have a higher protein content.
