Wages, Benefits Slow To Rise in Q1

Total compensation costs for civilian workers rose just 0.3 percent in the first quarter of the year, down from 0.6 percent the previous quarter, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wages and salaries also rose 0.3 percent, while benefits rose 0.5 percent.

Private-sector workers fared worse than their public-sector counterparts, with compensation rising just 0.2 percent, compared to 0.8 percent for state and local government workers. Benefit costs hit the public sector particularly hard, rising 1.1 percent, compared to 0.7 percent in the previous quarter.

Compensation cost increases also slowed dramatically for the 12 months ended in March, rising just 2.1 percent compared with 3.3 percent for the previous year.
