The nation's economy gained 146,000 jobs in November while the unemployment rate dropped to 7.7 percent, a four-year low, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Job gains were led by the retail sector, which added 53,000 jobs; professional and business services, which added 43,000; and leisure and hospitality, which added 23,000.
The number of people employed remained nearly unchanged at 12 million, while the civilian labor force participation rate fell by two-tenths of one percent.
Health care, wholesale trade and information services accounted for much of the remaining gains.
The number of long-term unemployed was little changed, as was the number of people employed part time for economic reasons and the number of persons marginally attached to the labor force, meaning those who were not working, but wanted to and had looked for a job in the past year.
The BLS revised its job estimates downward by 49,000 jobs for the previous two months. October was revised from 171,000 new jobs to 138,000; and September from 148.000 jobs to 132,000.
