Unitil Wants $10M Rate Increase In NH

Unitil Corp., the utility company serving four North Central Massachusetts communities, is asking for a utility rate increase for its New Hampshire customers that would increase revenues by $10 million a year.

The New Hampshire-based company, which owns Fitchburg Gas & Electric, said expenses, such as property taxes, depreciation and storm response have all increased, while energy conservation and a general downturn in the economy decreased energy usage.

The company’s last rate increase was in 2006. The proposed increase would take effect in 2011. The request must be vetted by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission.

Correction: An earlier version of this story did not make clear that Unitil’s rate increase request is only for its New Hampshire customers.
