The United States added 155,000 nonfarm jobs in December, while the unemployment rate remained at 7.8 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The rate fell seven-tenths of 1 percent in 2012, down from 8.5 percent.
The country averaged 153,000 new jobs a month in 2012, the BLS said. That was the same as the 2011 monthly average.
In December, employment gains were seen in health care, food services, construction and manufacturing, the BLS said.
The health care sector gained 45,000 jobs, bringing its 2012 gains to 338,000. Food services gained 38,000 jobs in November, beating its 2012 monthly average of 24,000. The construction industry gained 30,000 jobs, split between construction of homes and non-residential buildings. And manufacturers added 25,000 jobs during the month, bringing their 2012 gains to 180,000 jobs.
