UMass Partnership In Liberia

The University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester is working with the University of Liberia and Indiana University on a $7.2-million project to establish health care training programs in Liberia.

The effort is funded by a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development. It aims to create a new Center for Excellence in Health and Life Sciences at the University of Liberia. The center will offer academic and research programs in biotechnology, public health, nursing and pre-clinical training.

As of 2003, the African nation of more than 3 million had only 103 doctors, and less than one health care worker for every 1,000 people, according to a statement from UMass Medical School. The new effort is part of a campaign to rebuild health care education in the country.
