Tufts Medical, Vanguard In Cardiovascular Affiliation

Tufts Medical Center and Vanguard Health Systems New England, the parent of Saint Vincent Hospital and MetroWest Medical Center, have signed an affiliation agreement to enhance and expand cardiovascular services to patients in Central and Eastern Massachusetts, according to a statement from Tufts.

The two organizations will build new clinical programs in Worcester, Framingham and Natick and will collaborate on cardiovascular care, the statement said.

Physicians, nurses and administrators from Tufts Medical Center, MetroWest Medical (Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick and Framingham Union Hospital) and Saint Vincent will lead the initiative, which will focus on care provided in hospital and outpatient settings.

“Leaders of this new regional cardiovascular center aim to have a significant impact on the effectiveness of cardiovascular care and to develop methods for reducing the cost of care,” the Tufts Medical statement said.

“Cardiovascular disease can be among the most debilitating illnesses patients experience, and the cost of treating and managing these illnesses places enormous stress on the U.S. health care system,” said Dr. Octavio Diaz, chief medical officer for Vanguard New England. “Vanguard’s Massachusetts hospitals and Tufts Medical Center are well known for delivering the highest quality care in a responsible manner, and this partnership will enable us all to share more information about how best to deliver care to patients with … complex diagnoses.”

Last year, Vanguard Health Systems announced a broader partnership with Tufts that will allow both institutions to seek affiliations with or acquire independent hospitals in the state. More recently, Vanguard, based in Nashville, Tenn., agreed to be sold to Tenet Healthcare of Dallas.
