A garden accessible to people with mobility issues will be ready this summer at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston.
The Garden Within Reach “continues the organization’s long tradition of bringing people and plants closer together,” the Tower Hill said in a statement.
The inclusive garden was designed by a New York- and Los Angeles-based architectural firm and is being built by Lauring Construction of Worcester. Ryan Associates of Waltham is serving as the on-site landscape architect. Tower Hill will break ground for the garden later this month.
Tower Hill said the garden will be New England’s largest built on the principles of “universal design,” an architectural strategy that allows for equal access for all ranges of mobility. The nonprofit organization said it wants to connect people more easily to the beauty of nature, including those who may have felt left out of gardening because of physical limitations.
Plans include hanging planters that may be raised and lowered by pulley systems for ease of access, rotating planters, espaliered fruit trees along fencing, a water table than can be easily accessed by those using wheelchairs, raised beds with various plants selected for their beauty and fragrance, gentle sloping walkways, and seating.
The new garden will be located between the historic farmhouse and main buildings. July 15 is the target date for completion.
