The Usual on Shrewsbury Street announced it will close May 28, two months after its owner was indicted on drug charges.
Stacey Gala, who owned the restaurant with her husband, Kevin Perry, announced the closure Monday on the restaurant’s Facebook page. In March, Perry was arrested and charged with nine counts of money laundering, three counts of aggravated cash structuring, one count of making a false statement on a loan application, and one count of distribution of fentanyl, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston.
“This was not the ending I had hoped for, but as with many things in life – we can’t control the wind, but we can certainly adjust our sails,” Gala wrote on Facebook.
The Usual’s executive chef, Deven Senior, and General Manager Joe Herman have plans to open their own restaurant, which made Gala’s decision to close much easier, she said.
“When they proposed opening a new restaurant – a new concept they would run – my decision to close was made much easier,” Gala wrote. “I don’t know what new restaurant is going to open, but I have complete faith that Deven and Joe have something incredible planned for Shrewsbury Street.”
Perry owned both The Usual and The Blackstone Tap on Water Street through limited liability corporations. He allegedly used $130,075 to buy The Usual’s building at 166 Shrewsbury St. and $111,978 to buy the Blackstone Tap.
Perry also faced drug charges in 2005, when he was convicted in federal court of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute MDMA, or ecstasy, and sentenced to prison.
