Despite all the talk of how social networking websites can be used to promote business, companies are cracking down on how their employees use the online networks, according to a new survey by Robert Half Technologies.
The survey included telephone interviews with 1,400 chief information officers from U.S. companies with 100 or more employees.
It found that more than half of companies ban social networking on the job altogether. And the results suggest they're getting more restrictive. Thirty-eight percent of those surveyed have made rules on social networking more restrictive, while only 17 percent have relaxed them.
The changing standards focus most on goofing off at work, with 23 percent of CIOs tightening rules for personal use of the sites at work. Fifteen percent said they're reining in the use of social media for business.
Robert Half Technology advises companies to consider their specific situations when setting policies on social media. The firm said it's best to include input from various departments, including IT, legal, human resources and marketing, before setting new policies.
