State's Utilities Draft $4B Savings Plan

The state's electricity and natural gas utilities have developed a plan to save customers $4 billion through energy efficiency efforts over the next three years.

The plan was drafted by Waltham-based National Grid, gas utility NStar, Western Massachusetts Electric, New England Gas, Unitil, Berkshire Gas, Bay State Gas, Blackstone Gas and Cape Light Compact, a municipal aggregator. The plan is a response to the state's Green Communities Act which calls for the development of a statewide energy efficiency investment plan.

Coordination among the utilities to push for more savings for customers through efficiency could save nearly 2.5 million megawatt hours of electricity and 45 million therms of natural gas over the plan's three-year period. A therm is approximately equivalent to 100 cubic feet of natural gas, or about 100,000 BTU.

The companies estimate that the reduction in greenhouse gas that would result would be the equivalent of taking 40 percent of the cars off the state's roads. The plan also calls for the creation of 4,000 jobs in the clean energy sector.
