State Unemployment Rate Drops To 9 Percent

The state unemployment rate dipped from 9.2 to 9 percent in June, the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Wednesday.

The rate remains below the national 9.5 percent mark as the state gained 500 jobs, based on preliminary state estimates.

The private sector added 3,400 jobs while the public sector lost 2,900, the office said. Government employment declines were mostly due to U.S. Census workers no longer being employed.

The leisure and hospitality market added 4,100 jobs, the largest single-sector employment gain, while construction added 2,000 jobs. The manufacturing sector dropped 300 jobs in June after gaining 400 in May.

The state also revised the May employment figures down from a 15,800-job gain to just 15,200.
