State Jobless Rate Again Exceeds 9%

The Bay State's unemployment rate rose to 9.4 percent in December after dipping to 8.7 percent the previous month, the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development said.

The trade transportation and utilities industry, the leisure and hospitality industry and the construction, professional scientific and businesses services industries all lost jobs by the thousands in December.

The education and health care sector, the state's largest sector, had its third consecutive month of job gains.

The manufacturing sector added 500 jobs, financial activities added 300 and government added 900 jobs during the month.
