In honor of America Recycles Day, Gov. Deval Patrick announced $2.07 million in grants to help cities, towns and organizations invest in recycling programs. Central Massachusetts communities received a total of $181,000.
The money will be used to pay for measures to reduce the solid waste stream, according to a statement by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). The grants were provided through the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program, which is part of the state Green Communities Act.
"When we invest in recycling and re-use initiatives, we help communities save money in disposal costs, cut pollution and create green jobs for our citizens," Patrick said.
Central Massachusetts and MetroWest recipients include Athol; Blackstone; Bolton; Boxborough; Brookfield; Concord; Fitchburg; Framingham; Gardner; Greater Worcester Habitat for Humanity; Habitat for Humanity of North Central Massachusetts; Marlborough; Millis; Natick; Sherborn; Sudbury; Townsend, and Wrentham.
