Nurses employed at MetroWest Medical Center's Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick announced plans to picket as a call for what they say are necessary improvements to patient care conditions.
The announcement came in a statement released Friday by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the nurses' bargaining unit. It said the nurses have "serious concerns" about the hospital's alleged failure to provide appropriate staffing levels.
The statement said that has caused nurses to care for too many patients at once "which, according to medical research, places patients at a greater risk for complications during their hospital stay."
MetroWest nurses are asking for increased staffing as part of the new union contract that's under negotiation with Vanguard, according to the statement.
But Donna Gemme, chief nursing officer at MetroWest Medical Center, denied that staffing levels at either the Natick or Framingham campus are unsafe.
"We are not unsafely staffed on either campus," Gemme said. She added that she is surprised that the MNA is citing concerns about staffing levels as part of their ongoing contract negotiations, because she said the MNA withdrew its staffing proposal as part of bargaining in June.
The picket is schedule to run from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. outside the hospital's Union Street entrance.
