Worcester-based Spectrum Health Systems has been awarded a new contract by the Virginia Department of Correction to implement a substance abuse treatment program at a prison in Greenville, Va.

The program, Community Corrections Alternative Program, serves offenders with moderate to severe substance abuse disorders at the Cold Springs Correctional Unit. The program houses 100 offenders in a dormitory setting with the capacity to double in size if needed, according to a press release.

The program features a minimum of 300 hours of evidence-based programming per person with a focus on cognitive and behavioral skills training and positive reinforcement.

The program generally takes between six and nine months. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Spectrum was chosen by the same agency in 2015 to implement a 1,060-bed residential substance abuse treatment program for men at the Indian Creek Correctional Center. That program also offered specialized units for youthful offenders, military veterans and patients requiring higher-intensity treatment.

According to the release, Spectrum also operates a transitional program for female offenders at the Deerfield Women’s Work Center in Virginia, which helps prepare participants for a successful transition back into the community.
