S&P: More Companies Increase Dividends

The "dividend recovery" is under way, according to New York-based index provider Standard & Poor's.

More companies increased their dividends and fewer companies decreased their dividends during the third quarter.

Only 35 companies decreased their dividend this year, compared to 135 that decreased their dividend last year.

S & P found that 299 companies increased their dividend payments, a 56 percent increase from the 191 that increased dividend payments last year.

Year to date, companies are increasing their dividends as well. Last year through the first nine months, 730 companies decreased their dividends and 707 increased their dividends. So far this year only 117 have decreased their dividends and 1,033 have increased their dividends.

Dividend rates increased $5.1 billion during the third quarter, up from $3 billion last year.
