Retail Hiring Rises

Good news for job applicants trolling the malls and big-box stores: Over the past month, U.S. retail hiring rose, while the volume of applications for jobs fell.

The Kronos Retail Labor Index, based on a seasonally adjusted ratio of hires to applicants, rose to 3.7 in April compared with 3.5 in March. That means that for every 1,000 applications submitted, stores hired 37 people, on an adjusted basis.

Chelmsford-based Kronos Inc., which compiles the index, said the change reflects both an increase in hires, on a seasonally adjusted basis, from 40,463 in March to 41,097 in April. The total number of applications received by retailers fell from 1.2 million to 1.1 million over the month, also in adjusted terms.
