Massachusetts residents dropped sharply this year in an annual ranking of driver intelligence conducted by GMAC Insurer Personal Lines Group.
Motorists in the Bay State now rank 47th in the country in driver intelligence. The state dropped nine places in the rankings since last year, when Massachusetts ranked 38th.
The Northeast fared the worst of all regions in the United States and the Midwest fared the best. Men scored better than women, with 13.6 percent of males failing the test compared to 27.2 percent of females. And older drivers also tested better.
The results mean that nearly one in five drivers on the road today could not meet the basic requirements to get a driver's license, according to the insurer, which offers auto insurance lines.
The test, which quizzes people on safe following distances and correct actions to take when approaching a yellow light, can be taken at www.gmacinsurance.com
