'Reliability Issues' Scar Candela Bottom Line

Reliability problems and a spike in expenses brought margins down and put Wayland-based Candela Corp. in the red in its fiscal third quarter.

The company reported a third quarter net loss of $2.1 million compared to income of $1.5 million for the same period the prior year. The company reported revenue of $38.9 million for the quarter, an increase over the $38.7 million it reported for the same period the prior year.

Gross profit margin declined to 44.9 percent from 51 percent the previous year.

The company said it saw weaker sales volume in the quarter than it had last year and healthier margins were negatively affected by the cost of "reliability issues."

The company makes lasers used in cosmetic procedures.
