The Mass Gaming & Entertainment proposal for a slots parlor and hotel in Worcester elicited more than 25 comments, ranging from how it would boost jobs and needed government revenue, to the potentially negative effects on crime and other businesses.
This month, the Worcester City Council is weighing the proposal, which could bring up to 1,250 slot machines near Kelley Square on land owned by Wyman-Gordon, along with a 150-200 room luxury hotel on a yet-to-be-determined location closer to downtown.
There are better uses for that property than a slots parlor. Worcester's heritage does not lead us on a path to gambling and the misery that will accompany it.
Finally, Worcester enters the new-age vision: jobs, small business sales, plus a shot in the arm for the new Kelley Square. The timing is perfect as far as construction.
Gambling is not a key to anyone's economic success. It takes away from the businesses that surround it and it destroys individuals' lives. The jobs it provides are temporary (construction) or mostly low-paying.
