A report issued by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today shows that questionable insurance claims that could be fraudulent increased 57 percent between 2010 and 2012 in Massachusetts, with Boston, Springfield and Worcester producing the highest numbers of questionable claims.
The report included data on 17 different policy types, and deemed claims questionable based on one or more indicators of fraud. Common potential fraud cases included people reporting exaggerated injuries, seeking excessive medical treatment and filing suspicious reports of vehicles being hit while parked.
According to the NICB, there were 1,492 questionable claims filed in Massachusetts in 2010. The number rose to 1,768 in 2011 and 2,346 in 2012. In Worcester, the city with the third-highest number of questionable claims, the number of cases jumped from 84 in 2010 to 151 in 2012.
NICB did not speculate on the reason for the jump in questionable claims.
Policy types with the greatest number of questionable insurance claims, respectively, were personal automobile, workers’ compensation, commercial automobile, personal property and commercial liability.
