Worcester-based Providence and Worcester Railroad Co. said it has formed a strategic alliance with New England Central Railroad that is aimed at increasing business with several Canadian freight haulers who haul to New England.
The coordinated commercial and operating platform created by the two railroads will be called the Great Eastern Route. It is designed to increase both companies' business with Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to rail customers in southern New England, and to enhance their access to port facilities owned by P&W and New England Central.
The alliance recently hosted inspection trains with its Canadian "Class 1" partners, a designation for haulers that bring in more than $250 million in annual revenue.
New England Central is a part of Jacksonville, Fla.-based RailAmerica Inc., which owns and operates 43 short-line and regional freight railroads in North America, comprising about 7,400 miles of track. Both companies are publicly traded.
