Protonex plans expansion to commercial markets

Southboro-based Protonex Technology Corp. plans to introduce a line of reformer-based fuel cell products to target commercial industries.

The firm reformed common organic fuels, including methanol and propane, to allow the deployment of fuel cell power products without requiring access to hydrogen or other specialty fuel sources.  Protonex expects the products to be ready for OEM evaluation by mid-2007.  The company, which usually targets military applications, plans to make the products usable for a variety of applications including backup power and marine and recreational vehicle auxiliary power.

By year end, the company will double the size of its Massachusetts headquarters, open a branch facility in Oregon and hire at least 12 new employees to accomodate the expansion of its reformer business.
