Going green at work requires that companies show leadership, dedication and rewards. Experts say the key to reducing a corporate carbon footprint involves taking it step by step. But payoff can be great in cost savings and new marketing opportunities. Employees are less likely to get overwhelmed if changes are small and spaced out over time. Here are three tips on how to be more environmentally conscious without putting profits or productivity at risk:
Plan your attack. Make a list of ways your business can conserve and implement the ideas over time. “Consider using the EPA’s Green Business Guide to further develop your checklist,” says a blog post at AllBusiness.com. “The EPA guide includes incentives — ways the government will give you money for your efforts,” the post states.
Get employees on board. “Talk to your supervisor about setting up special benefits, like designating a prime parking spot for carpools,” suggests PlanetGreen.Discovery.com. Make it fun and easy for staffers to be more environmentally conscious with friendly competitions — for example, who can go the longest without printing an email.
Supply and demand. Boxes delivered to your workplace can be reused. Paper can be shredded and kept for packaging material. Keep an eye on office supplies and how they can be made greener — for example, encouraging staffers to bring their lunches in reusable containers or using the back of printed paper to make notes. “Ask the office manager to get ‘fair trade’ coffee for the break room,” suggests an article at Treehugger.com. Before you know it, green will be the new hue of your workplace.
