Northeast Utilities and NStar, which merged three years ago, will be renamed Eversource Energy as of Feb. 2, according to sources within the provider of electricity and natural gas.
The name change also impacts Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and natural gas utility Yankee Gas, as well as Western Massachusetts Electric Co., and Public Service of New Hampshire, according to CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross.
NStar provides natural gas throughout much of Central Massachusetts, and power to most of the MetroWest-495 region.
The rebranding of the company, which is dually headquartered in Hartford and Boston, comes almost three years after its $5 billion merger with Boston utility parent NStar.
Consolidating the brand was the next logic step for the company, said Tom May, president, CEO, and chairman, and Eversource best represents the company's focus moving forward.
Northeast Utilities serves 3.6 million natural gas and electricity customers in New England. After changing its name, the company's New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol will switch from NU to ES, effective Feb. 19.
