NORESCO begins $97M VA system energy work

Westborough energy efficiency and infrastructure solutions company NORESCO has begun work on a $97-million energy savings contract with a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ system in the upper Midwest.
The contract, with the VA Great Lakes Health Care system in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Northwest Indiana, includes energy and water efficiency and facility improvements at six sites.
Infrastructure improvements will include a new chiller plant, upgrades to building automation systems, HVAC improvements, a steam trap maintenance program and lighting and water system improvements.
According to Noresco, the project will help the VA reduce energy and water use by a respective 16 and 28 percent, resulting in more than $156 million in savings.
The contract includes no upfront capital investments by the government.
NORESCO claims the project will eliminate more than 65 million pounds of emissions each year, equivalent to removing more than 6,700 vehicles from the streets.
"Comfortable conditions for patients, families and healthcare staff are integral to the healing environment," said NORESCO Vice President Natasha Shah in a press release. "When we pair building solutions and energy efficiency, it allows the VA to address its mission and reduce energy use at the same time."
