Ray & Dick’s Bakery in Milford announced last week on Facebook its intent to close Sunday after 50 years in business.
“It is with heavy hearts, the owners and workers at Ray & Dick’s Bakery regret to inform you after May 13, 2018 we will be closing our doors to the public after over 50 years of service,” the bakery said.
The decision was made by the family’s third generation of bakers in the Auger family, the bakery wrote.
“This decision has not been an easy one and has been made after long thought and careful consideration,” the bakery said.
In a brief phone interview Monday, owner Mark Auger said his brother and current co-owner is retiring and a fourth generation of the bakers in the Auger family -- including his children -- isn’t likely to take ownership.
“I’m ready to move on to a different path,” Mark Auger said.
Beginning the day’s bake at 2 a.m. has become an exhausting daily exercise, Auger said.
“I’m ready to hang that kind of stuff up,” he said, adding that he’s worked in the bakery since he was 10.
Auger said his grandfather was the first generation of bakers in the family, and Ray and Dick -- Auger’s father and uncle -- began operating the Exchange Street shop in 1967.
Since then, it’s been a Milford staple.
The Facebook post garnered 172 comments and was shared 132 times, and the real-life feedback has been just as robust.
“Everybody’s coming in,” Auger said. “It’s like Christmas time.”
