Nonfarm employment up

The national unemployment rate remained steady in May at 4.5 percent, as nonfarm payroll employment and health care and food services added jobs to offset a loss in manufacturing employment.

Nonfarm employment added 157,000 jobs nationwide last month, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Monthly job growth has averaged 133,000 through 2007.

Average hourly earnings also rose 6 cents in May, a .3 percent increase over April.

The amount of people working part-time who would like to work full-time but can't because of scaled back hours or inability to find suitable employment remained steady at 4.5 million people in May. The figure is still up 332,000 on the year, according to the Department of Labor.

For the month, total employment stood at 145.9 million, out of a potential 152.8 million people eligible to work, according to the report.
