Nichols College has named a provost from Bryant University in Rhode Island as its next president.
Glenn Sulmasy will succeed Susan West Engelkemeyer, who will retire at the end of the school year after a decade leading the Dudley school. Nichols announced his appointment on Friday.
Sulmasy, who lives in Connecticut, joins Nichols with 24 years of experience in higher education, most recently as provost and chief academic officer at Bryant. He will start on July 1, becoming Nichols' eighth president.
Sulmasy's career has also included stints as a law professor at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. At the Coast Guard, one of his alma maters, Sulmasy also led the humanities department. He's also been a lecturer at the University of Connecticut School of Law, Roger Williams Law School in Rhode Island, University of California Berkeley School of Law and Harvard University. He's also a visiting fellow at George Mason University School of Law in Virginia.

Sulmasy joined Bryant in 2015, with his responsibilities there including overseeing more than 1,100 faculty and staff members and an operating budget of $144 million. His time at Bryant included starting new academic programs including an online MBA.
In addition to a degree from the Coast Guard, Sulmasy also has degrees from the University of Baltimore School of Law, the California Berkeley School of Law and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Sulmasy will be one of at least two new Central Massachusetts college presidents before the fall.
In February, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester named Vincent Rougeau, the dean of the Boston College Law School, as its next president. He will be the first Black and first lay president for the school. Framingham State University President Javier Cevallos announced in March he'll retire after the 2021-'22 school year. David Fithian began as president at Clark University in Worcester last fall.
