New system tells docs when treatments aren't working

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is working with Atlanta, Ga.-based MDdatacor on a system that uses patient medical records to let doctors know if treatments aren't working as well as they're supposed to.

The system, which is being developed by MDdatacor, an information technology company, combines patient medical records with claims and pharmacy data from health insurers into a searchable database.

Blue Cross "believes in rewarding doctors and hospitals for delivering safe and effective care, and in empowering patients to take more responsibility," said Dr. John Fallon, chief physician executive for Blue Cross.

The new system will be offered to a small number of physicians in Massachusetts over the next several months, and the pilot program is planned to take about a year. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
