Natick developer pitches 19-unit project in place of former taproom

Natick-based developer Stonegate Group has proposed a 19-unit residential-and-retail redevelopment project at the former site of Kells Beer Co., a closed brewery and taproom, according to the firm’s website.

The proposal for 21 Summer St. was pitched at a joint meeting of Natick’s historical commission and design review board on Jan. 13.

Along with the one- and two-bedroom units, the ground floor of the development would have 5,000 square feet of retail space, according to Stonegate’s website.

It would have an underground garage parking with 16 spaces, which some board and commission members expressed concerns about, since there are fewer parking spaces than residential units. The building is located across the street from Natick Center commuter rail station.

Located on roughly a quarter of an acre of land, the existing 5,700-square-foot building was built in 1942, according to the Natick assessors’ database. Stonegate bought the property, which is assessed by the Town of Natick at about $630,000, for $760,000 in November 2020, about four months after the Kells Beer Co. taproom officially closed.

Stonegate has nine redevelopment projects in Boston and Natick, including a completed mixed-use project at Natick’s former American Legion Building and an ongoing development at the St. Patrick’s school.
