Massachusetts saw approximately $1.33 billion in adult-use cannabis sales in 2021, more than double the amount recorded for the three-year total in 2018, 2019, and 2020, according to public data from the state Cannabis Control Commission.

Year-to-date sales prior to the start of 2021 were $1.2 billion, reflecting the industry’s rapid growth since adult-use sales first began in November 2018, when two dispensaries opened in Leicester and Northampton. Since that time, more dispensaries have slowly opened, to where the state now has more than 100 fully operating.

Adult-use cannabis sales surpassed $1 billion for the year by mid-October in 2021, less than a year after the state hit $1 billion all-time adult-use sales in 2020.

Lifetime adult-use sales currently sit at $2.54 billion, a figure that includes the first half of January.
