Most workers report getting job offer feelers from other companies during the past year, according to a new poll of more than 600 U.S. and Canadian employees.
The poll, conducted by Right Management, part of ManpowerGroup, found that 64 percent of survey participants – nearly two-thirds - claimed to have been approached either directly or indirectly about a possible job offer over the past 12 months.
Right Management said that does not indicate a trend, but rather a hopeful sign for the workforce.
Also, the widening use of social media networking sites such as LinkedIn may be a factor in the apparent rise in "feelers," an expert with Right Management said.
"Despite a continuing tough job market, a majority of employees claim to be getting approaches from other companies," said Margaret-Ann Cole of Right Management. "While we might take this as an indicator that the job market is heating up, it's important to keep in mind that we saw the same finding in 2010, when 54% reported being approached by another company about a job. I suspect we don't have a new trend so much as a sign of hope on the part of many in the North American workforce."
Yet, Cole cautioned that some job feelers may have been little more than workplace gossip. "The 'indirect' job feelers may be just about hearing of an opening from a fellow worker, or possibly something via social networking," she said. "How real are these feelers? We cannot say. However with the increased use of sites like LinkedIn – which is also reported to be the tool of choice by recruiters – many people may be hearing more about job opportunities. Such technology is enabling communication channels to be opened."
Nevertheless, the latest findings are consistent with other Right Management workplace polls, Cole noted.
