The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority has received approval for $750,000 for a commuter shuttle that will travel between Framingham and the MBTA's Woodland station on the Green Line.
The MRTA is also in talks with the MBTA to start a pilot program to let shuttle users pay for their rides with their MBTA Charlie Cards.
"This will give people the opportunity to use one fare method on our buses. They won't have to dig around in their pockets and purses for change, they can use one card. It's going to be such a convenience for riders," said Ed Carr, administrator for the MRTA, which is based in Framingham.
Carr said the authority has not received the money yet, but the projects have been approved by the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. The grants include $350,000 for operating costs and another $400,000 for new shuttle buses.
The route will go up and down Route 9 in the Framingham area, going as far as the intersections of Route 9 and I-90 near Southborough, although there will be stops in the Golden Triangle section on Route 9 in Natick and Framingham. The route will also cross over Cedar Street in Wellesley and go up Route 16 to Woodland station.
Carr said he plans to have the service in place by early spring.
