UMass Trustees Give Collins The Nod

The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees has formally chosen Michael F. Collins as chancellor of UMass Medical School in Worcester.

Collins, 53, became interim chancellor at the school after Aaron Lazare stepped down from the position last year. Before moving to the medical school, he was the chancellor at UMass Boston. He served as president and CEO of Caritas Christi Health Care System from 1994 to 2004.

The UMass board approved Collins’ appointment unanimously at the recommendation of system President Jack M. Wilson. Last month, a 23-member search committee led by trustee Philip W. Johnson and Nobel laureate Craig C. Mello unanimously recommended Collins for the job.
