U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern will ride from Worcester to Boston on Friday to highlight a permanent increase in the commuter tax benefit for mass transit riders.
The benefit is part of a bipartisan, multi-year tax package that was signed into law in December, according to a release from McGovern’s office. It makes up to $255 a month in transit benefits available to mass transit commuters throughout the country. Restoring this benefit has been a goal of his, the Congressman said in a statement.
“This is a big win for Massachusetts, creating big savings for the thousands of workers who take the train to Boston every day and offering employers another great benefit they can use to attract top talent,” McGovern said.
The "Commuter Benefit Parity Act of 2015" was a bipartisan bill to establish parity between the parking and transit portions of the transportation fringe benefit by setting the monthly caps for both at $255 per month.
The Congressman will be at Union Station beginning around 8 a.m. to talk about the benefits and then ride the rail into Boston where he will speak about how the benefit will help many of the Boston businesses and employers where Central Massachusetts commuters work.
