Massachusetts ranks 2nd best in energy efficiency

Massachusetts ranked second in the country, behind California, in the latest State Energy Efficiency Scorecard.

The commonwealth scored 44.5 points out of 50 in the annual ranking done by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, a nonprofit energy research organization working with the U.S. Department of Energy. ACEE works independently on policies to reduce energy waste and battle climate change.

The scorecard ranks all 50 states on their energy policies and progress. All of New England scored well, with five of the six states ranking in the top 10. While California and Massachusetts came in first and second, the rest of the top 10 were, in order, New York, Vermont, Maine, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Rhode Island (tied), Connecticut, and Minnesota. New Hampshire ranked 19th.

According to the scorecard, the commonwealth’s 2021 climate law established new greenhouse gas reduction goals for energy efficiency programs, and program administrators stepped up investment in building decarbonization through heat pump deployment and home energy retrofits, which was outlined in its recent three-year energy efficiency plan.

On top of that, the August 2022 bill An Act Driving Clean Energy and Offshore Wind created new regulation for offshore wind farms and solar developments in Massachusetts, while adding more support to the state’s push for electric transportation vehicles, such as requiring the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus fleet to be entirely electric by 2040, and includes stopping the sale of internal combustion vehicles after 2035. The law requires new energy disclosure requirements for buildings more than 20,000 square feet.

ACEE’s scorecard acknowledges Mass Save’s impact in helping corporations find ways to save on energy.
